Abstract

579,191. Handles ; bottles. LONG, B. Aug. 16, 1941, Nos. 10455, 10456 and 10457. Convention dates, Aug. 21, 1940, Feb. 13, 1941, and June 28, 1941. [Classes 66 and 125 (i)] [Also in Groups II, XI, XXII, XXIII and XXXVI] Metal is united to glass by an intermediate layer of material which becomes integrated with both the metal and the glass and is elastic enough to prevent separation by tearing, the layer consisting of a superficially oxidized metal, such as aluminium or copper, deposited in a granular state on the metal such as by atomizing the coating metal, by rubbing the cleaned metal surface with the coating metal or, in the case of wire, passing the wire through a draw-plate lined with the coating metal. The coating and base metals may be heated as by a gas burner which may promote the oxidation of the coating metal. The glass is adhered either by pressure or by melting the glass in a reducing atmosphere and pressing it within a mould containing the coated metal parts. For preserve containers, the glass body 22 is moulded with metal rings or annuli 24 having coated parts or flanges 25 within or outside the glass, the metal parts being then soldered to metal covers 23 or glass covers with similar metal rings attached. Metal handles may be similarly secured to cups, glasses or kitchen and table utensils.
