Abstract
575,966. Folding paper; feeding webs. HUDSON, G. R. April 5, 1944, No. 6318. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] Folding paper.-In a machine for wrapping letters &c. in wrappers or envelopes, the letters &c. 2, Fig. 1, are stacked on a table 1 pivoted at 6 and oscillated by a link to bring the lowest letter, exposed through an opening 8 in the table, into contact with a pair of continuously driven folding rollers 9, one of which is of rubber and draws the sheet into the bite of the rollers. The folded sheet passes down a guide 10 and up to a stop 12 on a table 11 so that a onger flap of the sheet is above a pair of folding rollers 19, 20. An envelope blank 43, Fig. 6, fed from a zig-zag pile by a feed mechanism 44, and severed by a knife 45, is fed by rollers 16 up to a front stop 18 on a table 17 below the table 11. A blade 25, operated by a cam 26 on a cam shaft 27 tucks the letter and envelope into the bite of the rollers 19, 20 to form the folds c, b Fig. 4a in the letter and envelope respectively and the folded sheets pass down a plate 22 up to a stop. The rear part of the envelope is then drawn into the bite of the roller 20 and a co-operating folding roller 21 to form the fold e, Fig. 6, and the envelope with the completely enclosed letter then passes down a guide 51 to a device 52, Figs. 1, 2 for folding over the side flaps 62 of the envelope which, on their passage down the guide, have received a coating of gum from a mechanism 58. The device 52 comprises a feed belt 53 with co-operating rollers 54, 55, and folding blades 56. Side rollers 57 complete the folding of the flaps. The blade 25 is provided with a small roller 25a which, by contacting the roller 20 limits the downward movement of the blade and also assists the feeding of the sheets into the bite of the rollers. Feeding webs.-The web of envelope blanks is fed by a roller having a segmental feeding portion 61 which, with a coacting roller 64 feeds a length slightly greater than the length of a blank on to a table 13. At this time feed fingers 15 for the severed blank, mounted on a reciprocating carriage 14, are in their rearmost position so that the side flaps 62 of the blank ride over ramps 15a carried by the fingers 15 into a position in front of the fingers. A cam 66 carried by the feed roller now lifts the roller 64 so as to free the web which by its weight falls back slightly so that the rear edges of the flaps 62 engage the fingers 15 thus registering the blank. The knife 45 is then actuated by the cam 26 to sever the blank which is then fed forwards to the rollers 16 by the carriage 14 which is actuated by a second cam 35 on the shaft 27. The feeding segment of the feed roller is provided with grooves to accommodate stationary web guiding bars 63, and when the cam 66 releases the roller 64, the latter presses the web against the bars to hold it stationary while it is severed by the knife 45. If the blanks are not provided with side flaps 62, they may be provided with slots or recesses to receive the feed fingers 15.
