Abstract

570,919. Pneumatic tyres. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 10, 1944, No. 4510. Convention date, March 10, 1943. [Class 144 (ii)] At the bead region of a tyre having a carcass formed of plies 11 of strain-resisting elements, one or more heat-resistant strips of non- inflammable material treated with an adhesive compound are firmly bonded to the carcass plies. As shown, a chafer strip 18 of heatresistant, non-inflammable material, such as woven asbestos strip, is provided externally and the beads 12 are enclosed in flippers 19 of heat-resistant, non-inflammable material, such as woven glass fabric, the chafer strip 18 and flippers 19 being bonded to the plies 11 by an adhesive compound such as a solution of rubber in a formaldehyde resorcinol mixture which will vulcanize firmly. A further chafer strip 21 may be provided at that side where the wheel rim flange abuts and a reinforcing strip 20 of non-inflammable fabric may be provided between the chafer strip 18 and the flippers 19. The plies 11 are folded around the beads 12, as shown at 13. The arrangement renders tyres, such as heavy-duty aeroplane tyres, more resistant to the injurious action of heat arising from the braking operation.
