Abstract
568,328. Feeding fuel to continuous kilns. PROCTOR, J. May 28, 1943, No. 8590. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] Portable self-contained apparatus for feeding fuel into a continuous kiln for firing bricks &c. comprises a fuel hopper 27 connected to a fuel chute 14 by a trough 10 containing a rotary helical fuel conveyor 43 to which stepwise unidirectional, rotary movements are imparted by mechanism operated by a falling weight or a spring. As shown, the conveyor 43 is fast on a shaft 30 journalled in end plates 11, 12 on the trough and carrying a bevel wheel 31 engaging a pinion 32 on a shaft 33 mounted in brackets 34 on the plate 12. A ratchet wheel 35 on the shaft 33 is engaged by two pawls 37, 38 carried on the shorter arm of a lever 36 pivotally mounted on the shaft, the larger arm of the lever adjustably supporting a balance weight 39 which has a lug 41 for connection to a chain 42 or the like. The upper end of the chain is connected to a rocker (not shown) pivoted on an overhead support above the apparatus and adapted to be rocked in known manner to lift the lever about its pivot, in accordance with the required feed the pawls slipping over the ratchet wheel. On downward movement of the lever assisted by the weight 39, the pawl and ratchet device is operated to rotate the bevel wheel 31 and shaft 30, thus causing the conveyor 43 to force fuel along the trough until it is guided by fins 44 through an aperture 24, down an inclined spout 21 and through an aperture 23 into the chute and thence through a firing hole in the kiln. The hopper is received in a socket 26 on the trough. A pair of adjustable legs 28 secured in lugs 29 on the trough together with a flange 16 on the chute 14, provide a tripod for the apparatus. The fire in the kiln may be inspected by moving a slide 19 on a removable cover 17 on the chute to expose a sight-hole 18. Access to the interior of the trough is provided by a cover 47. A curtain wall 14 in the shoot, above the aperture 23, prevents ignition of fuel in the spout 21, which is integral with the chute, and in the trough 10.
