Abstract
565,006. Heating air. YOUNG, J. S. A. Jan. 11, 1943, Nos. 525, 3103 and 8789. [Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XI] Air is supplied to a domestic fireplace for primary and secondary combustion and to be heated for sub, sequent delivery into the room in which the fireplace is situated from a source external to and independent of the air in the room such as the space beneath the floor. In the open fireplace shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings filed with Provisional Specification 525/43, air passes from beneath the floor 23 of the room through a conduit 28 leading centrally below the hearth 40, extending below the grate 18 and upwardly at the back of the grate for delivery of air for primary combustion to the grate and through passages 33 in the back of the fireplace for secondary combustion. Air also passes from beneath the floor through lateral conduits 27, 29 to the air-heating chamber 34 from which it passes to the room through an outlet 35 controlled by a damper 37. The outer ends of the conduits 27, 28, 29 are enclosed at the top by removable tile trays which form the hearth. Wire gauze screens are arranged at the inlets to the conduits 27, 29 and a damper 42 is arranged at the inlet to the conduit 28. A ring 17 beneath the grate may be fitted with burners connected to a gas supply for igniting or reviving the fire. Part of the air heating chamber may be blanked off and used for heating water.. The fireplace shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings filed with Provisional Specification 3103/43 has an air inlet 69 supplying air from beneath the floor to a chamber 58 supplying air to the grate and to openings 60 in the fire back. Air also passes to the air-heating chamber 68 and to a domeshape chamber 80 communicating therewith for delivery through an extension 81 fitted with a damper to the room. The extension 81 is fitted with electric heating elements 83 and a reflector 84 for imparting additional heat when required. A motor 104 drives a fan 105 for forcing the ventilating air. Sliding arcuate shutters 73, 74 running on guide rails may be withdrawn from the position shown at the back of the fireplace and arranged so as to partly or wholly close the front of the fireplace and water-heating pipes 85. A renewable air filter is arranged at 102. Holes 56 admit air to the fire for secondary combustion. A gas ring 55 serves for igniting the fire or may be used instead of solid fuel. Fig. 2 of the drawings filed with Provisional Specification 8789/43 shows a gas fire in which air enters a conduit 114 from beneath the floor and after passing through filters (not shown) mixes with gas for primary combustion in the burner 121 and passes through an opening 126 for secondary combustion behind the refractory elements 125. Air also passes from the conduit 114 to the chamber 127 and then to a tubular or plate heater 132 through which hot gases pass from the fire to the chimney flue 111. Part of the heater may be employed for heating water. The heater is fitted with a grating 131 for the passage of heated air into the room. Specifications 29642/96, 12344/03 and 24987/07, [all in Class 126], are referred to.
