Abstract

Crystalline ketols from isophorone and higher homologues thereof are prepared by heating the isophorone or higher homologue thereof in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alcoholate. The catalyst may be employed in the solid state as pellets, flakes, granules or powder, or it may be in aqueous or alcoholic solution. Alcohols mentioned include methyl, ethyl and isopropyl alcohols. The preferred compound which is prepared by the process of the present invention is di-isophorone. The reaction is preferably carried out at 50 DEG -250 DEG C., and the products are purified by recrystallisation after a preliminary washing to remove the catalyst. Examples are given of the preparation of di-isophorone under varying conditions using sodium hydroxide and alcoholate as catalysts.
