Abstract
558,616. Clinometers. TEMPLETON, J. C., and WINKLER, L. T. May 8, 1942, No. 6269. [Class 40 (i)] A clinometer comprises a thin cylindrical vessel 20 which is half filled with mercury 24 and has a bare resistance 21 extending around the inner surface, Figs. 1, 3, or along a chord, Fig. 4, so that as the vessel tilts about its horizontal axis more or less of the resistance is short-circuited by immersion in the mercury. The angle of tilt may be indicated by a galvanometer 28 in circuit with the resistance. In Fig. 3, the resistance extends around the whole of the inner surface and a Wheatstone bridge circuit is employed. For use in bore-hole surveying, two clinometers 20 of the kind described are mounted in a frame 32 with their axes at right angles, the frame being pivoted in a container 33 about an axis normal to the axes of both the clinometers, but being prevented from rotation when the container is rotated by a magnetic or gyroscopic device. The clinometers may control apparatus within the container for recording on a time-base, but preferably they control recorders 28 at the surface over conductors included in the winding cable 35, which through suitable gearing drives the record drum 41 as the instrument is lowered and raised. The clinometers may be operative simultaneously or one may be operative during lowering and the other during raising of the instrument.
