Abstract

547,325. Magnesium oxide. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS), Ltd., and PRYTHERCH, W. E. Dec. 20, 1940, No. 17958. [Class 1 (iii)] Magnesium oxide obtained from the precipitate formed by treating seawater, brines &c. with calcium hydroxide is purified by calcining it, forming a slurry and adding the slurry to seawater &c. which has been pretreated, as by calcium hydroxide, for the removal of bicarbonates. The process may be carried out in conjunction with that of Specification 553,731, according to which excess of calcium hydroxide is used in the pretreatment and a precipitate containing magnesium hydroxide is obtained.
