[Classes 96 and 140] A substitute for leather in the manufacture of straps, harness, military equipment, haversacks and driving belts comprises a plurality of layers, each consisting of a sheet of duplex rubber lateximpregnated paper folded along two longitudinal lines so that the edges are turned inwards, the layers being assembled so that abutting edges 15 of adjacent layers 14 are staggered and united by rubber solution, the whole being subjected to pressure, and, if desired, heat, to vulcanize the rubber. The duplex paper is made by calendering together two sheets of rubber lateximpregnated paper coated with rubber solution. The strip may be stitched longitudinally with thread or twine 16.
