Abstract
541,145. Safety-wheels for motor-cycles &c. WESTCOTT, J. S. May 9, 1940, No. 8369. [Class 136 (i)] The safety wheel 12 is mounted on a frame 9 pivoted on a spindle 5, and may rise and fall freely except when upward movement is checked by a one-way clutch device actuated by the drivers foot. The device comprises a sleeve 5 keyed to the spindle S, and a loose brake drum 7 surrounded by a coil spring 8 anchored at one end at 9<SP>1</SP> and having its other end connected to a foot pedal 13. The sleeve 5 has recesses containing balls 6. Normally the spring is loose on the drum and as the frame 9 rises i.e. pivots anticlockwise, the balls drive the drum anticlockwise, but when the driver depresses the pedal he tightens the spring on the drum, which is thereby rendered immovable and cannot be driven by the balls; the frame is thereby prevented from rising, but may fall freely. Stops 14 limit the upward movement of the frame 9. A spring 15 supports the frame. The foot pedal may operate indirectly, as by rods and levers or Bowden mechanism. There are two wheels 12, one on each side of the machine.
