Abstract
537,346. Electromagnetic switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 12, 1940, No. 733. Convention date, Jan, 12, 1939. [Class 38 (v)] Noise of operation of an electromagnetic contactor or like device is reduced by means of a friction device 81 connecting the armature 13 to a rod 80 which has a certain freedom of movement relative to the base 14. An auxiliary pole piece 71 loosely mounted in the armature 13 may also be provided. In the form shown the armature 13, which controls a main contact 40 and an auxiliary contact 64, is pivoted at 23, and the auxiliary pole piece 71 has a neck portion which projects through a narrowed portion of the recess in the armature. In action the piece 71 first strikes the attracting core 17 and the relative motion that then ensues between the piece 71 and the armature 13 together with the strong magnetic forces present provide a cushioning effect. The friction device 81 comprises a friction block connected to the rod 80 and embraced by two spring-biassed friction washers connected to the armature. The rod 80 carries two washers 82, 83 which determine the extent of its movement.
