[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] In vehicles in which the body moves rearwardly on the chassis and then tips to discharge or pick-up a load, an automatically-operated ground-engaging jack is forced downwards against the ground as the body begins to tip to form an additional support for the body during the tipping process. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which the piston of a hydraulic cylinder 7 is connected to one cross-bearer 16 of the body-frame. Admission of fluid to the left hand end of the cylinder, for example through the medium of a pump 8 driven by themotorofthe vehicle, also causes the jack foot 37 to be extended as shown in dotted lines and gives an initial tilt to the body about the axis of the rollers 30 by the riding of the cams 21 over the rollers 23 on the chassis. When these members disengage, further cams 24 engage rollers 25 and increase the angle of tilt. Finally the rollers 30 reach the forward end of the slots 29 and together with the jack form the support for the body during the rest of the tipping movement. The jack reaches the ground early in the tipping movement. A hydraulic circuit and arrangement of control valves for the mechanism is described. Discharge can be assisted by releasing the upper or lower end of the tail gate 18. In a modification for picking-up and setting down loads as a unit, the tail gate 18 is replaced by a load-support slidable in vertical guides. This rests horizontally on the ground when the body is tipped and the vehicle can be drawn away leaving the load stacked on the support. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the body or the flat table 67 is fitted with a crane or derrick so that a container can be attached as shown in the full line position and swung to the dotted-line transporting position by the movement of the body.
