Abstract

531,389. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metal. WOODWORTH, A. L. March 29, 1939, No. 9820. Convention date, April 22, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups XXI and V] Bullets are made of a foraminous metal composition prepared by sintering a compressed mixture of metal powders in a bullet-forming mould. The composition is of a known type, such as is described in Specifications 284,532, [Class 82 (i)], and 365,068, and the following example is given:- powdered copper 90 parts by weight, powdered tin 10 parts, stearic acid ¢ part, boric acid ¢ part, graphite 1¢ parts. The sintering is performed in a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere at a temperature between 1500‹ and 1150‹F. Preferably, the bullet is charged with a lubricant, as by immersing it while hot in an oil bath. Part of the lubricant may be subsequently expelled, so as to ensure that the external surface of the bullet will be free from lubricant except during firing.
