Abstract
530,305. Cements. FORSEN, L. March 2, 1939, No. 6880. Convention date, March 4, 1938. [Class 22] Portland cement, slag cement and other hydraulic binders prepared by sintering or melting processes and containing calcium silicates and aluminates are treated to retard the action of the aluminates with water and accelerate the reaction of the silicates with water by adding a retarder consisting of an alkali hydroxide and an accelerator consisting of a calcium salt more soluble than gypsum such as calcium chloride or plaster of Paris, the alkali being present in amount less than sufficient to react with the calcium salt to yield calcium hydroxide. The materials may be added to the cement or to the gauging water. The retarder may also contain lime, prepared by burning calcium carbonate at a low temperature and slaking.
