Abstract

522,381. Vehicle door fastenings. WILMOTBREEDEN, Ltd., and SMYE, A. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35660. [Class 44] A safety fastening for the rear door d of a motor car comprising a bolt slidably mounted in the central pillar b and shot into engagement with a keeper g on closure of the front door c has the bolt formed in two parts e, f, the former telescoping in the latter, with a compression spring k between them so that the door d may be slammed after the door c has been closed. The bolt is mounted in a tubular case a let into the pillar, and a second compression spring h. mounted between a guide bush j and a collar i on part e retracts the bolt and projects the rounded end of part f when the door c is opened. So that the fastening may be rendered in operative at will the edge of door c may have an aperture, not shown, which receives the projecting end of part f when the door is closed, unless the aperture has been covered by a slidable or pivoted abutment plate. Alternatively, the free edge of the rear door may have a pivoted or slidable plate which can be moved to a position preventing engagement of the bolt with keeper g.
