Abstract

[Class 58] In order to toughencereals to as to increase their resistance to attacks of insects, fungi &c. during storage, the grain is wholly or partially gelatinized by the action of heat and water and/or saturated steam, the process of treatment being carried far enough to toughen the grain without destroying its integrity. and the grain is subsequently dried to natural moisture content. The grain may be steeped in warm or hot water for a period of time sufficient to enable the water to penetrate into the core of the grain, and the steeping process may be carried out under pressure. After being steeped in water, the grain may be subjected to a further treatment in which steam is injected into a closed vessel containing the grain so that the steam acts directly on the grain to cause water to condense on it, the steam pressure being allowed to rise and then being reduced, this treatment being repeated one or more times, after which the grain is dried to natural moistening content. The grain may be treated in a closed vessel with steam alone, the pressure of the steam being raised and suddenly lowered one or more times. Cooling water may be admitted to the vessel so as to wet the grain to promote the condensation of further water on the grain during the steam treatment. The closed vessel may be exhausted of air prior to the admission of steam or water.
