Abstract

517,947. Cartons. CHALMERS, J. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Aug. 11, 1938, Nos. 23741 and 29534. [Class 18] A carton to hold rod-like articles, such as cigarettes, is made from a single..blank to form a body part and a box-like lid and the crease 24, Fig. 3, constituting a hinge for the lid is interrupted, as by slit 25 or by means of a circular aperture in the blank, to minimise the tendency for the lid to be torn off along the hinge as it is being opened. The body portion of the carton comprises a front 5, back 6, sides 7, 8, and reinforcing flaps 12 secured to the bottom panel 11, and the lid comprises a front flange 14, back wall 15, top 16, side flanges 17, 18, reinforcing flaps 21 which are secured to the inner face of the top 16, and a further flap 23 folded and secured to the inner surface of the front,flange 14. The material between the slits 25 is also creased but on the opposite face to the hinge crease 24. A partitioning member, Fig. 7, or liner for the front and side walls is made up from a single blank slit to provide lateral projections 42 which contact with the side flanges of the lid and give a "snap" action thereto and the blank is also bent inwards slightly at 38 to allow the lid to pass freely over the top of the sides 30. These sides also project above the hinge 24 so that access to the tops of the cigarettes in the carton can be had from both back and front. The doubled partition 34 may be omitted.
