Abstract

509,362. Vehicle bodies. AMBI-BUDD PRESSWERK GES. May 27, 1938. No. 15857. Convention date, July 17, 1937. [Class 108 (i)] A self-supporting closed body for road vehicles is comprised of inner and outer pressings maintained in spatial relationship and forming double walls and the double walls of the sides, the front and the rear of the body are connected continuously with the double walls of the roof and/or the floor so that the stresses set up in the structure are transmitted directly from wall to wall. In one form, Fig. 1, the roof and side walls comprise panels 10, 11 connected together by flanges 12 at the margins of large cutouts 13 in the panel 11, by flanges 14 at the door and window openings and, if desired, by Z-section spacers 15. The floor comprises panels 19, 20 reinforced by spacers 21 and inserted between longitudinal box members 18 to which the panels 10, 11 are connected by 'flanges 16, 17. In another form the panels of the side walls are integral with the panels of the floor and roof and the outer panel of the floor is formed with longitudinal channelshaped depressions connected to the inner panel. In a third form, Fig. 3, the sections of the side walls, roof and longitudinal box members correspond to those shown in Fig. 1, but the panels 29, 30 of the floor are reinforced by transverse spacers 31 and a triangular section member formed by the dashboard 32, an upturned portion 33 of the panel 30, and the panel 29. Near the centre post 34, the longitudinal sills 35 are connected by a channelsection member 36 which may form a front seat support and may be closed by a portion 37 to form a box-member. Further transverse reinforcement is provided by a box-member formed by the panel 30, a rear seat support 38 and a wall of the rear-axle tunnel 39. The floor panels 29, 30 are continued at 41, 42 to form the rear wall of the body which is connected with the roof panels 43, 44. The panels 43, 44 are connected with the panels 45, 46 of the front wall which ends at the dashboard 32. The dashboard mav also be made double walled by means of an inner panel 47. The panels of the side walls may be extended at 48, 49 to support the front wheels &c. The inner panel of the side wall, Fig. 4, is extended upwardly and connected to the outer panel of the roof by a flange 52 to form a longitudinal closedsectioned member. As shown in Fig. 5, the centre of the roof may be reinforced by a longitudinal fin 56 and channel members 58. In a modification, the outer roof panel is connected to the inner panel, on both sides of the longitudinal centre line, by flanges and the open channel thus presented covered by a triangular fin so that a five-sided closed-sectioned member is formed. In another modification, a channel member, having vertical side walls and an upper peaked wall, is attached to the inner panel, the outer panel being connected to the side walls. These latter reinforcements may also be applied to other parts of the body. If the centre of the roof is reinforced the wind shield and rear window openings may be divided by a strong rib to transmit the forces to be absorbed. A channel may be provided in the floor to house the cardan shaft. Specifications 507,097 and 507,796 are referred to.
