Abstract

507,543. Magnetrons. FIDES GES. FUR DIE VERWALTUNG & VERWERTUNG VON GEWERBLICHEN SCHUTZRECHTEN. Nov. 24, 1938, No. 34263. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1937. [Class 39 (i)]. In a magnetron having a cathode mounted axially within an anode system, the requisite magnetic field having lines of force running substantially parallel to the axis is produced by a magnet accommodated within a hollow longitudinal space which is cut off from the discharge space. In the form shown, the magnetron comprises anodes 2, 3 and a cathode 10 wound round a glass, ceramic or metallic tube 6, which is sealed into the envelope 1, and in which is placed the permanent magnet 7. The magnet may be replaced when necessary or remagnetized by a yoke 8 and coil 9. In a modification, the magnet may be a bar electromagnet, and may be provided with polepieces screwed on to the projecting ends of the tube 6 so that the air gaps between polepieces and magnets and the effective flux may be varied. The tube which may be of copper may be insulated from cathode and magnet by a thin ceramic cylinder, or a burnt-on layer of ceramic powder or a glass flux. Liquid or gaseous cooling fluid may be passed through the hollow space; simple convective cooling may be obtained by mounting the space vertically.
