[Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A floor covering comprises a plurality of panels each in the form. of a plurality of thin and narrow wood strips 2 lying close together on, and glued to, a felt or other flexible backing 1, and means are provided at the meeting edges of the panels for holding them together and preventing relative movement of the panels transversely of the plane of the covering. The wood strips 2, which are glued to the backing 1, but not to each other, are produced from a thin board by cutting or sawing the board along parallel longitudinal lines so as to produce strips which are either completely separated from each other as shown in Fig. 2, or are held together by thin strands 12, as shown in Fig. 5. The depth of the strips may be from <5>/16 inch to # inch and the width about # inch. The panels shown in Fig. 2 are provided with end grooves 3 for the reception of tongues 6 on wood spacing strips 4, 5 which are either made long, as shown at 4, or in a series of short pieces, as shown at 5. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the spacing strips are dispensed with, and adjacent panels interengage by means of tongues 3 and grooves 8, and, in this case, the flooring may also be glued or cemented to the sub-floor. Glue may be used in the joints between the panels.
