Abstract

487,816. Exhaust - silencers. MILES, W. C. Aug. 28, 1937, No. 23631. [Class 7 (ii)] A part of the exhaust gases entering at 16 passes through a central tube 18, and the remainder into an annular passage 35 between the outer casing 10 and an intermediate chamber 17, this latter part flowing through tangentially-directed slots 37 in the wall of the chamber 17, and then through oppositelydirected slots 38 in the tube 18. The front end of the tube 18 may be closed, the whole of the exhaust passing through the passage 35 and the slots 37, 38, and the chambers 10, 17 may converge in conical form towards the exit end of the tube 18. Such a conical silencer may have attached to its outside a streamline casing, the space between the conical and streamline walls being filled with mineral wool or other sound-absorbing material.
