484,144. Photo - electric apparatus for testing steam. SCHMIDT'SCHE HEISSDAMPF-GES. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32965. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1936. [Class 40 (iii)] A transparency altering with the moisture content of steam is utilized directly to give information regarding the moisture content. A light beam is passed across the steam pipe 1, Fig. 1, through windows 5, 6, Fig. 2, in a tubular body 2 from a lamp 8 to a photo - electric cell 12 connected to a galvanometer 14 empirically calibrated to show the moisture content. A throttle valve 17 may be automatically operated through a relay 15 when the moisture content exceeds a permissible value, so as to dry the steam by its throttling action. Shutters may be provided between the pipe and the lamp and the cell. In a modification, the lamp and the cell are arranged on the same side of the pipe, and reflectors are provided on the other side to make the light pass a second time through the pipe in the reverse direction. In other modifications, the light is passed longitudinally or transversely through a branch pipe connected to two spaced points along the length of the main pipe.
