Abstract
481,827. Making glass fibres. MODIGLIANI, P. Feb. 17, 1937, No. 4758. [Class 56] [Also in Group XII] In the manufacture of fibres, e.g., by subjecting a stream of molten glass to a blast of steam or gas, the stream is caused to flow in a sinuous and preferably helical path, e.g. on an inverted cone 15, Fig. 1, in a heating chamber 11 on its way to the blast nozzle 21 or other drawing means. In this arrangement cullet is fed through an opening 12 and is melted on the top of the cone. In a modification, the heated stream falls on a radiallygrooved mushroom-shaped body and is thus divided into smaller streams which are then drawn out by blast nozzles or rollers. The mushroom-shaped body or the nozzles or both may rotate. As shown in Fig. 5 the stream after subdivision by the body 28 is blown up separate tubes 37 which are heated by the exhaust gases from the heating chamber. The dish 36 carrying the tubes may be rotatable. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the exhaust gases are led through tubes 43 (which may be horizontal instead of inclined) enclosing smaller tubes 44 through which the fibres are drawn by the steam blast. The distributer 28 and the pipes or, as shown, the entire structure may be made to rotate. In a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), additional steam inlets are provided. A modified distributer is shown in Fig. 10.
