Abstract

481,102. Winding coils. CONNAUGHT SPARE PARTS, Ltd., and MADDOCKS, L. T. Aug. 27,1936, No. 23493. [Class 120 (ii)] In a coil-winding machine comprising a base, a carriage traversed by a single rotatable screw supported from the base, a double-acting dog clutch and associated gearing for effecting the rotation of the screw in one or other direction according to the direction of movement required to be imparted to the carriage, a spool or former for the coil supported from the base, guiding means associated with the carriage for moving the wire over the former and means associated with the carriage for automatically actuating the dog clutch for effecting a reversal of the drive of the screw when the carriage reaches the limit of its movement in one or the other direction, the wire is fed to the guiding means over a tension arm and means are provided for automatically correlating the feed to the tension on the arm. As shown the driven shaft 19, carrying the spool or former 20, supported from the base 9, is geared to a shaft 24 carrying pinions 25, 26, pinion 25 gearing with a pinion 27 loose on an extension 34 of the screw 34a and the pinion 26 driving through gears a second pinion 29 also loose on the extension 34 in a direction reverse to that of the pinion 27. The opposing faces of the pinions 27, 29 are provided with teeth and a toothed dog clutch 30 disposed between the pinions is splined on the extension 34 and can be moved by a rockable cradle 31 into engagement with one or the other of the pinions to drive the screw 34a. The cradle 31 carries a spring-pressed plunger 32 engaging a bar 33 having inclines 33a, 33b separated by a fiat surface 33c and provided with adjustable stops 40; the stops are provided with adjustable screws which are engaged at the end of each traverse of the carriage 38 to shift the bar 33 lengthwise and cause the plunger 32 to move from engagement with one of the inclines on the bar and engage the other and so shift the clutch 30 from engagement with one of the pinions 27, 29 into engagement with the other and so reverse the rotation of the screw. The bar 33 may be moved by a hand lever 33d to cause the plunger 32 to engage the flat surface 33c on the bar and hold the clutch out of engagement with the pinions 27, 29. The carriage 38 carries a split nut engaging the screw 34 and the parts of the nut may be separated by actuating a handle 35a carrying a cam when it is desired to adjust the carriage along the screw. The wire passes from a supply spool 10 over a guide 15a at the end of the tension arm 15 to guides 38b, 38c on the traverse carriage, the arm 15 being carried by a spring-controlled spindle 14, and carrying a pin which can bear on the underside of a lever 13 to lift a brake pad 12 into engagement with a cylindrical enlargement 10a on the spool to correlate the feed from the spool 10 to the tension on the arm 15 ; the lever 13 is supported by a spring 16 and the tension of the spring 17 on the spindle 14 can be varied by ratchet and pawl mechanism for adjusting the tension on the arm 15.
