Abstract

Hydrocarbons containing more than two carbon atoms or their liquid or solid oxygen-containing derivatives, e.g. alcohols, aldehydes and acids, are obtained catalytically from a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and inert gas containing less hydrogen than carbon monoxide, the inert gas, which is essentially carbon dioxide, comprising between 20--90 per cent, preferably 40--90 per cent of the mixture. Other inert gases such as methane or nitrogen may also be present. The concentration of inert gases may be maintained by separation of the constituents which are liquid between 0--50 DEG C. under a pressure of 100 atmospheres after each passage through the reaction chamber. When the concentration of carbon dioxide becomes excessive, it increasingly dissolves in the water formed or may be separated in the liquid form. The process may be carried out at temperatures between 150 and 500 DEG C., preferably 200--400 DEG C., and preferably under increased pressure of 5--500 or more atmospheres. The preferred catalysts are those containing metals of the 8th group, particularly iron. The fresh gas supplied may have a high content of carbon monoxide, e.g. from 40--70 per cent. According to an example, a suitable reaction chamber consists of an externally heated tube containing about 30 layers of a catalyst consisting of ferrosoferric oxide containing uranium, titanium and potassium compounds (prepared by melting iron powder, titanium oxide, uranyl nitrate and potassium hydroxide in a stream of oxygen and reducing with hydrogen at 400 DEG C. and 150 atmospheres). A mixture containing mainly about 51,0 per cent carbon dioxide, 22,0 per cent of carbon monoxide, 10,0 per cent hydrogen, 12,0 per cent methane and homologues and 3,0 per cent nitrogen is converted at 100 atmospheres and at a temperature of 265--300 DEG C. Liquid products amount to about 94 per cent, the remainder being methane and its homologues. The fresh gas added comprises 3 pts. carbon monoxide and 2 pts. hydrogen containing about 0,5 per cent of nitrogen. Specifications 337,409 and 338,854, [both in Class 2 (iii)], are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for the conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives comprises ferrosoferric oxide containing uranium, titanium and potassium compounds and prepared by melting iron powder, titanium oxide, uranyl nitrate and potassium hydroxide in a stream of oxygen and reducing with hydrogen at 400 DEG C. and 150 atmospheres. A small proportion of methane and its homologues are formed. Specifications 337,409 and 338,854, [both in Class 2 (iii)], are referred to.
