467,354. Road signals for controlling traffic. SCOTT, W. H. Feb. 24, 1936, No. 5478. Addition to 419,533. [Class 118 (ii)] The road contact device described in the parent Specification is modified by forming the resilient bed, which supports the contact assembly, of strips of springy metal and resilient material such as rubber. The metal strip or strips serve to distribute the pressure of heavy loads on the bed to avoid local distortion. The form of the outer cover is also modified. As shown, the contact strips 1, 1<1> separated by a resilient insulating strip 2 are supported on one or more relatively thin strips 8 of rubber resting on a plain strip of springy metal 6 further supported on a relatively thick strip 5 of resilient material. This is carried by a further metal strip 7 which may also be springy and supported on another resilient strip 7<1>. The width of the strips comprising the contact assembly and its bed are such that the whole assembly inserted in a rubber tube 10 has substantially flat sides and bottom and a curved top. The body 13 of the outer cover is flat at the top and inclined at the sides, the top having a curved tread 18 projecting above the framework which is constructed substantially as described in the parent Specification. In order that light loads may affect mainly the contact spring assembly, the bed being compressed on heavy loads only, the strips of resilient material in the assembly and the bed may have holes of graded size and spacing, and the contact and other metal strips may be graded as to thickness and temper.
