Abstract
448,496. Electromagnetic guns; projectile-like carriers for goods &c. SANDOR, N., 33, Hook Road, Surbiton, Surrey. Dec. 3, 1934, Nos. 28333/34 and 945/35. [Class 92 (ii)] [See also Group XXX] Projectiles or projectile-like carriers for goods &c. are ejected from an electromagnetic projecting apparatus by a moving magnetic field generated by windings connected to a polyphase A.C. supply, the pole pitch of the winding system being progressively increased along the projecting apparatus. The projecting apparatus may consist of a tube 4 with spaced coils 1, 1a, 1b, &c. thereon, the coils, e.g. 1, for any phase being connected in series. The projectile 7 may have rings of copper or aluminium embedded in the iron circuit. According to a modification, the tube 4 may be replaced by parallel bars 10, Fig. 9, of magnetic material, disposed about the axis of the projectile, and slotted to carry windings 12 connected to a polyphase A.C. supply. , The projectile is provided with two sets of short-circuited windings so that the construction is similar to the development of the stator and rotor of an induction motor in a straight line. The projectile may be adapted to switch on and off the current automatically as the projectile traverses the apparatus, so that only the active portion of the winding is energized.
