Abstract
<PICT:0443773/IV/1> In the treatment of threads, foils, and the like with fluids under pressure, the materials are run from the outer air into an end chamber containing compressed air or other inert fluid, over a positively driven feed device contained in said chamber, and thence through a communication between the end and a treatment chamber directly into treatment fluid under pressure contained in the treatment chamber. The materials may pass directly from the treatment chamber into the open air, or into a second end chamber which may or may not contain a positively driven feed device. When feed devices are contained in each end chamber, they may be run at different speeds so as to stretch the materials in the treatment chamber. Again, when two end pressure chambers are employed, the feed devices may be situated outside the chambers. Examples of suitable fluid treatments are treatments with saturated or wet steam, or hot water under pressure at a temperature above 100 DEG C. so as to stretch the materials and treatment with saponifying fluids under pressure. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of materials made of organic derivatives of cellulose. In Fig. 2, a filament 1 enters the apparatus through an orifice 3, passes around nip rollers 5 contained in an end pressure chamber 4, passes through an orifice 6 directly into the treatment chamber 7 which contains a perforated inlet for the steam 15 and an outlet 18, enters a second end chamber 19 through an orifice 8, passes around nip rollers 9 and finally leaves through the orifice 20. Each of the chambers is fitted with a pressure gauge and relief valve, and the end chambers are also fitted with a steam trap. A modified apparatus for liquid treatment is described, in which the nip rollers are situated outside the end chambers.
