Abstract
443,608. Friction clutches. NEWTON, N. B., Newton & Bennett Works, Valetta Road, Acton, London. Oct. 24, 1934, Nos. 30443/34 and 6216/35. [Class 80 (ii)] The driven member of a plate clutch comprises a pair of friction-faced plates 10, 11 arranged back-to-back and fixed to a flanged hub, which may be fixed to or splined on the driven shaft, with cylindrically- or spherically-dished spring steel members or discs 15 arranged between the plates. When the clutch is fully engaged, the discs 15 are completely flattened. The discs are carried alternately by the two plates, or all by one plate, and means are provided for limiting the separation of the plates so as to pre-load the discs. As shown in Fig. 2, a rivet serves to clamp the plate 10, a disc 15, and a friction facing 12 together, the head 17 slidably engaging a hole in the plate 11 while an enlarged head 16, accommodated in an aperture in the facing 13, limits the separation of the plates. As shown in Fig. 6, a tubular rivet 20 fixes the lining 13 to the plate 11, while a rivet 21, passing through the rivet 20, serves to limit the separation of the plates. Alternatively, tongues on one plate may be bent over to engage the outer face of the other plate so as to limit the separation.
