Abstract
Bituminous emulsions are treated by the addition of an alkaline clay paste and sodium or potassium silicate added in succession or simultaneously after pre-mixing. The clay used may be Bentonite or the clay known under the Registered Trade Mark "Wil-Kinite." Example: an emulsion is made from 55 parts of bitumen and 10 parts of a soap comprising 40 per cent resin or resinous oil and 60 per cent of a 7 per cent sodium hydrate solution; 30 parts of a clay paste, comprising 15 per cent Bentonite, 78 per cent water and 7 per cent of a 7 per cent sodium hydrate solution, are then added, followed by 5 parts of sodium silicate solution (35 DEG Baum<\>ae).
