Abstract

432,807. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gearing. SWAN, J. G., 14, Old Square, Lincoln's Inn, London. Feb. 2, 1934, Nos. 3531, 3788, and 4491. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] In a power transmission system having a hydraulic coupling or gear of the F÷ttinger or like type, means are provided for superseding the drive through the coupling or gear ; such means comprise a clutch and a one-way mechanism, the latter serving to permit the driven shaft to rotate at a speed greater than that of the driving shaft, and thereby to drive the driving shaft through the coupling or gear. The clutch may, if desired, be of the dog or like type, arranged to be automatically disengaged by greater speed of the driven shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the casing 102 carried by the driving shaft 101 and constituting the driving member 103 of the hydraulic coupling is connected to a centrifugally operated clutch constructed as described in Specification 401,889, so that at a predetermined speed of the shaft 101, drive is transmitted through the clutch to a member 123, connected through one - way drive mechanism to the driven shafts 107, 105. Means may also be provided to engage or disengage the clutch at will and if desired the arrangement is modified so that the speed of the driven shaft actuates the centrifugal clutch. The form shown in Fig. 2, which is a modification of that shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 420,161 comprises a friction clutch 209 to connect the driving casing 202 to the primary element 203 of the hydraulic coupling, a positive clutch 218, 219, and a one-way drive 224, 225, 226 between the shaft 211 of the element 203 and the clutch member 218. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the casing 302 carrying the primary member 303 of a hydraulic gear has a clutch member 307 adapted to be engaged by a clutch member 306 on the shaft 321 of the reaction member 320. The shaft 321 is prevented from rotating oppositely to the normal direction of rotation of the driving and driven shafts 301, 305 by one-way mechanism 324, but is adapted to drive the shaft 305 through one-way mechanism 309, 308, 325. A mechanical reduction gear may be combined with this form ; the gear may comprise a sun-wheel on the shaft 305, an annulus on the shaft 321, and a planet carrier on an output shaft, and the one-way mechanism 324 may be replaced by a brake drum. In another form, the reaction member 420, Fig. 4, of a hydraulic gear has a shaft 416 carrying a brake drum 426, having a centrifugally-operated clutch whereby after release it may be connected through one-way mechanism 424 to a member 425 carried by the casing 402 ; the reaction member 420 is connected to the shaft 405 through one-way mechanism 410, 408, 407. In modifications the member 425 may be secured to the member 424, or alternatively the shaft 405 may be connected to the shaft 416 through a positively engaging clutch 431, 432. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the driving shaft 501 is connected through the casing 502 with a planet-carrier 512, a sun-wheel 509 is mounted on the shafts 506, 510, and an annulus 508 is connected to the primary hydraulic member 503. The shaft 510 carries the supporting member 514 of a centrifugally operated clutch in series with one-way mechanism 519. Specifications 310,377, [Class 69 (ii)], and 393,296 are referred to in the Complete Specification, Specification 164,042, [Class 80 (ii)], in the second Provisional Specification, and Specifications 393,294 and 399,155 in the third Provisional Specification.
