Abstract
431,448. Slow-closing valves. WILSON, W. W., WILSON, C. O., WILSON, S. G., and BARBER, WILSONS, & CO., Ltd., Boundary Road, Westbury Avenue, Wood Green, London. Feb. 26, 1935, No. 6160. [Class 135] In a self-closing valve or tap of the kind comprising an axially-movable main valve spindle 10 the rate of return of which to its closed position is dependent upon the rate at which fluid is permitted to flow from the exterior of a dashpot chamber 6 to the interior through a valve-regulated passage in the spindle 10, the regulating valve 27 is mounted in the spindle 10 and is adjustable independently thereof, being readily accessible at the operating end of the main valve spindle 10 for this purpose. The main-valve washer 11 is secured against a shoulder on the spindle 10 by a collar 13 of slightly less diameter than the chamber 6 and co-operates with an annular valve seat 12 formed on a body member 4 screwed into the casing 1. The chamber 6 is screwed into the inner end of the member 4 and in it slides the collar 13 and also a cup washer 14 secured between the collar 13 and a suitably-shaped nut 15 screwed on to the end of the spindle 10. An axial bore 21 in the spindle 10 communicates through radial passages 22 in the spindle and an annular space 23 and radial passages 25 in the collar 13 with an external recess 24 in the collar which is in communication with the liquid supply through holes 8 in the chamber 6. A needle valve 27 is mounted in the spindle 10 to control the fluid flow through the bore 21, and has a threaded part 29 engaging a threaded part of the bore 21 for adjustment by means of a screw-driver inserted at the top of the casing. The valve 11 is opened against the action of a spring 17 and during this operation, liquid is forced from the chamber 6 through the passages 21 ... 23. Liquid can then flow past the valve 11 to the tap 3 through openings 8, 37. When the valve is released, liquid flows back through the passages 21 .. 23, the rate of flow being regulated bv the valve 27 so as to control the return of the spindle 10 to normal position. In place of the needle valve 27, a rod extending through the bore 21 may carry a conical valve member engaging a seating at the end of the bore 21. A screwed plug 31 closes the outer end of the bore 21 and a screw-on hood 32 of inverted cylindrical cup form with a coloured closure disc 35 is mounted on the end of the spindle.
