Abstract
415,281. Turning - gear. HERTZ, S., 37, Rue du Ranelagh, and BERGER, M. P., 3, Avenue Friedland, both in Paris. Oct. 31, 1933, No. 30260. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1932. [Class 7 (v).] An engine starter comprises two simultaneously actuated racks b engaging at opposite sides of a pinion c, the racks and the pinion having inclined teeth whereby the pinion is moved axially into engagement with an engine shaft a to be driven on longitudinal movement of the racks. The latter may be actuated pneumatically, hydraulically, or by explosion gases, or by an electric motor, an inertia starter comprising a flywheel, an electromagnet moving armatures coupled to the racks, or resilient means such as springs. As shown, the racks b are formed on tubular members g carried by pistons h moving in compressed-air cylinders e and returned by springs i. Axial movement of the pinion brings clutch teeth d<1>, Fig. 3, into engagement with teeth d<2> on the engine shaft a. Accidental engagement of the clutch teeth d2 during normal running is prevented by spring-actuated balls l carried by the pinion and engaging helical grooves k, Fig. 4, in a fixed bearing shaft j, the grooves being opposite in pitch to the teeth of the pinion. In a modification, the shaft moves with the pinion. Starting may also be effected manually by means of a handle on a sleeve m, Fig. 3, arranged within the shaft and having clutch teeth n.
