Abstract
<PICT:0413134/III/1> Sulphide ore in finely divided form and air are introduced into the upper portion of a preheated chamber, additional air is introduced into the lower portion of the chamber in countercurrent relationship, and the gaseous reaction products are withdrawn at a point intermediate the top and bottom of the chamber. A furnace described with reference to the roasting of zinc sulphide ore comprises a refractory-lined chamber 1 into which the ore and air insufficient for complete roasting are introduced through tangentially-disposed pipes 6. The furnace is preheated to 1000 DEG C. by burners set in work doors 7. Additional air is supplied through pipe 16 and hollow rabble arms 8, the latter conveying the roasted ore to outlet 18 whence it is passed to hopper 19. Fumes and volatilized cadmium and lead oxides escape through flue 12 at such a speed that the relatively heavier dust particles settle, vanes 15 being provided to break up the whirling motion of the gases. The flue may be made of chromium steel, and may be provided with an air jacket; its inlet is disposed about one half to two thirds of the way down the chamber. The gases, after separation of oxide fume and other solid matter may contain 8 per cent or more sulphur dioxide and are suitable for acid manufacture. Specification 374,486 is referred to.
