Abstract

394,476. Converting. SCHLESINGER, K., 39, Friedrichstrasse, Friedrichshagen, Berlin. May 19, 1932, No. 14241. Convention date, May 20, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] Apparatus for producing a "saw-tooth" potential for use, for example, in producing the time deflection in cathode-ray oscillographs and for scanning in television apparatus employing Braun tubes comprises a condenser 8 which is charged through a thermionic valve 1 having a cathode 2, an anode 9, and a grid 6 connected to a high positive potential so as to accelerate the electrons before reaching the anode. The anode current is thereby rendered practically independent of variations of anode potential. The condenser 8 is charged so that its potential rises at a uniform rate until it reaches the ignition potential of a glow discharge tube 12, whereupon the condenser is discharged. The grid 6 may have a positive potential of about 1000 volts, a resistance 7 of about a megohm being included in the circuit to limit the grid current to about 1 milliampere. The cathode 2 may be produced by the barium vapour process and may be heated by a filament 3. The hightension supply may be a battery 5 or mains supply apparatus. A synchronizing potential may be applied at 13. The frequency of the charging and discharging cycle may be controlled bv regulating the potential applied to an additional grid electrode between the cathode 2 and grid 6, for example by a variable tapping on a potentiometer resistance connected across a battery. This control may be automatic in accordance, for example, on the intensity of the image element to be transmitted in a television process, as shown in Fig. 3. The fluorescent spot on the screen 19 of a cathode-ray tube 20 is focused by a lens 18 on a film 17, which is capable of being advanced line by line at right-angles to the plane of the drawing. Behind the film 17 is a matte screen 25 and a light-responsive cell 26, which is connected through an amplifier 27 to control the potential of the grid 14 of the thermionic valve 1 through which the condenser 8 is charged. The frequency may be reduced by applying an alternating potential to the grid 14, the bias being chosen so that the ignition voltage of the tube 12 is reached only after a certain number of oscillations.
