Abstract

357,215. Collapsable packing cases. O'CONNOR, A. E. and O'CONNOR, F. A., 182, Nicholson Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. June 16, 1930, No. 18409. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 18, 1930.] [Class 18.] In a collapsable case of the kind having its ends formed of a plurality of panels hinged together, the outer ends of these panels are hinged to the sides of the case by two or more L-shaped spring steel brackets, one limb of each of which is secured to the inner surface of the side of the case whilst the other limb extends inwardly and is provided with a terminal eye through which a hinge-pin secured in the outer end of the end panel is passed. In one construction shown in section collapsed, Fig. 3, the end panels consist of rectangular frames 7 covered interiorly by boards 8, and they are hinged together by flat metal strips 15 located in slots in the frame 7, each strip having eyes at its ends to take hinge-pins 17 passing through grooves between the frame 7 and boards 8. The hinge between the panels and the sides 13 consists of L-shaped, spring steel brackets, which are hidden when the case is erected, and one limb 20 of each bracket is riveted &c. between the adjacent side of the case and a lining thereto, and the other limb is located in a slot in the frame 7 and has a terminal eye 22 to take a hinge-pin running in a groove between the frame 7 and boards 8. The abutting and outer ends of the panels are cambered to allow hinging movements, and there is sufficient space when the case is collapsed for the top and bottom 10 to be inserted between the sides 13 and the end panels. The boards 8 and the lining to the sides 13 are rabbeted to allow the top and bottom to seat flush with the sides when the box is erected. Exterior battens 25 on the top and bottom 10 project so that they can be nailed to the exterior battens 26 on the sides 13. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a construction in which the frames 7, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), are covered with sheet metal, and the end panels are connected together by ordinary butt hinges 28 and are hung on similar hinges 29 on vertical fillets 30 on the case sides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
