May 2, 1930, No. 13619: [Class 64 (i).] In heat exchangers, a rotary fan is provided with inner blades 4 mounted on a boss 10 which force a gas, such as air for use in a furnace, down the central passage of the apparatus, and outer blades 5, arranged in an annular space around the central duct, which force gases such as combustion products in the opposite direction through an annular outlet 44. The apparatus is built up on a base ring 1, which carries rings 31, 32, connected by ribs 33, supporting a tier of radial, vertical plate chambers 27. Above these are placed further tiers of chambers 27 separated by rings 34 .. 37. The apparatus is enclosed in cylinders 2, 3 and held together by bolts 40. Alternate chambers 27 are open top and bottom, and are connected with corresponding chambers in the other tiers to form vertical passages through which the hot gases rise as shown by the dotted arrows and pass through guide blades 25 to fan blades 5 and thence to outlet 45 ; any solid matter in the gases settles in space 49. The intervening chambers are open at the sides so that air drawn in through guide blades 13 by fan blades 4 follows the course of the continuous arrows owing to deflecting cones 42 and is drawn off from the annular chamber 43. An additional set of blades 6 is provided to vary the ratio of the two gas currents if necessary.
