Abstract
310,067. Pugh, J. V., Bayliss, G. T., and Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd. Nov. 21, 1927. Securing together machine elements for transmitting rotary motion. - In order to eliminate slackness in splined or serrated rotational connections between members such as a wheel part and a shaft or hub, the members are relatively rotated by inserting through displaced apertures therein tapered or wedge-like elements substantially parallel to the shaft &c. axis. The axle a, Fig. 1, of a vehicle wheel is provided with zones of V-shaped serrations a<1>, a<2> separated by a groove a<3>, in which lies a split or multi-part locating-ring b held in place by the bevelled or rounded edges c<4>, c<5> of two discs c, c<1> forming the central part of the wheel. The discs have bosses c<2>, c<3> grooved to coact with the serrations a<1>, a<2> and are held together and slightly rotated by tapered studs d engaging displaced apertures therein. The outer ends d<3> of the studs may be used for attaching a vehicle wheel of the kind described in Specification 304,624, [Class 144 (i), Wheels for vehicles]. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the discs are dished and formed of material tapering in thickness towards the contacting peripheries, the locating-ring and its groove being of considerable width. Fig. 4 shows a cycle chain-wheel j and pedal crank g secured on the serrated axle-end h<1>, the tapered bolts k engaging displaced holes in the wheel j and a flange g<1> integral with the crank g. The tapered studs &c. may be conical to engage circular holes, Fig. 3 (not shown), may have flats on their inner and outer surfaces and engage elongated holes, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), or may be pyramidal, Figs. 9 to 11 (not shown), or rectangular with two tapered sides, Figs. 12 to 14 (not shown).
