Abstract
297,096. Vereinigte Stahlwerke Akt.- Ges. Sept. 16, 1927, [Convention date]. Ferric chloride. - Ores containing iron are treated with chlorine or hydrochloric acid in a state of vapour, so that ferric chloride is volatilized and then reduced to metallic iron, by suitable means, for example, by means of hydrogen. The chlorination process is improved by carrying out the process under increased pressure, preferably about 10 atmospheres. The reaction speed is increased by altering the pressure several times during the chlorination, even sufficiently to produce a partial vacuum. This is stated to assist the expulsion of the reaction product from the ore and bring fresh gases to attack the ore.
