Regulating. - Windmills are regulated by varying the effective radius of the sail vanes without actually varying their sail area, and also, if desired, by auxiliary braking means such as slots formed between displaced sections of the vane, with or without devices adapted to interrupt the stream line surface of the vane. The radial position of the vane 3 on its arm 2, which rotates with the shaft 1, is determined by a sliding weight 5 and spring 4 housed in the arm and connected to the vane by ropes and pulleys. The vane head-piece 8 is fixed to the end of the arm 2, and the slot between the head 8 and the vane 3 creates braking eddy currents. The vanes may be adjusted radially by screw spindles driven electrically or otherwise, or from the interior of the mill by means of rope or the like carried through the hollow shaft. Alternatively, Fig. 6, the arms 2 carrying the vanes 3 are folded towards one another either by a predetermined wind pressure acting in opposition to a spring 4<b>, or by a power transmission through the hollow shaft.
