Description
This invention relates to a device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult.
Background
Parents especially fathers have been carrying their children on their shoulders for thousands of years and this mode of transport for the 18 month old toddler up to a child of 4 or 5 years old has become a recipe for great fun, adventure1 bonding, intimacy and trust building between parent or responsible adult and the child been carried.
Reasons There are countless reasons why a parent, a guardian or other responsible adult choose to hoist a child unto their shoulders and just as many reasons why children get excited at the prospect of riding on the shoulders of an adult. Among the reasons is the advantage of the * child having a better view at some event or to keep a child safe and out of harm's way in a crowded situation or when the family is out walking and the child gets too tired to walk, to name but a few -the point is that carrying a child on the shoulders is a time-honoured practice.
The Problem Even though carrying a child on the shoulders is successfully and universally practiced by parents and adults there are a few drawbacks to its popularity e.g. the lack of any back or head support for the child and the fact that the only real security against the child falling backwards from the shoulders of the carrying adult is for the said adult to hold onto the legs of the child; the only other alternative to holding the child's legs is that the child been carried is forced into holding onto the head or neck of the person carrying him or her with all the accompanying feelings of insecurity and discomforts to both adult and child.
These are legitimate drawbacks, dangers and hindrances to carrying children on the shoulders safely and comfortably as the practice relates to health and safety.
The Solution The invention of a device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult solves the above problem.
Detailed Description
The main parts of the device are labelled: A, B, C and G. See FIG. 1 FIG.2 FIG.3 FIG.4 Part (A) is an integrated seat unit moulded in the same lightweight material as the back, shoulder and chest parts of the body harness indicated as part (C) combined with moulded upper leg supports (C2) and (CS) to prevent the child's legs from fatling away to the sides of the shoulders of the adult when carrying the child. Parts (C2) and (C3) are located and integrated just below the right and left shoulder section of part (C) the body harness.
Part (B) is an integrated moulded fulcrum rest located on the back and near the top section of part (Cia) between the shoulder blades of the person wearing the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult.
Part (A) is a moulded and integrated seat unit that sits on top of part (B) the integrated moulded fulcrum rest.
Parts (Al, P2, A3, A4, and pans 03, 04 and 05, are seven integral design features in-built to the seat unit (A) the last three parts making up the three point safety harness) that make the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult a practical, "safe and comfortable" proposition.
(Al and A2) Is the back and adjustable telescopic head-rest section of the moulded and integrated seat unit designed to prevent the child from falling backwards off the shoulders of the adult and to support the neck or head of the child depending on the size of the child, (Al) is the padded back rest.
(A2) is the adjustable telescopic head rest.
(A3) and (A4) are the two left and right side walls of the moulded and integrated seat unit (A) designed in the form of a bucket seat to prevent the child from sliding or falling side-ways from the shoulders of the adult and the two side walls (A3) and (44) of the seat (A) also double as convenient arm-rest's for the child.
Part (03) is the left nylon shoulder strap ending with a male clip (CS) and part (04) is the right nylon shoulder strap ending with a male clip (C9) and part (05) is the centre nylon strap ending with a double female clip (F3) located between the legs of the child, in the base of the seat unit (A) All the parts A, B and C are moulded together to become one single integrated unit which forms the upper and outward frame and structure of the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult.
Parts (Dl and 02) consists of two nylon straps which are welded to1 or integrated to the bottom parts of (C4 and CS) and which end in two male clips (C6 and C7) which fall beneath the chest and extend down where they attach to two female clips (Fl and F2) located on the front of part (F) the integrated padded waist! hip belt.
There are two thumb loops on each of the nylon straps (Dl and D2), one high thumb loop (El) located near the top of the left nylon strap (Dl) and one low thumb loop (E2) located near the bottom of the left nylon strap (Dl) two other thumb loops are located on nylon strap (02), the high thumb loop (E3) is located near the top of the nylon strap (02) and the low thumb loop (E4) is located near the bottom of the nylon strap(D2).
The four thumb loops are part of the design of the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult and the four thumb loops allow the adult who is wearing the device to hook the left thumb into the high (El) or low (E2) thumb loop located on the left nylon strap (Dl) and the four thumb loops allow the adult who is wearing the device to hook the right thumb into the high (EB) or the low (E4) thumb loop located on the right nylon strap (02) so that the person wearing the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on their shoulders may if they choose, support their arms by holding onto the device using the left and right high (El and E3) thumb loops to comfortably suspend their arms from their left and right thumbs at chest height or if the person wearing the device chooses to hold onto the device at the lower waist height, suspending their arms comfortably from the left and right thumbs using the lower left and right loops (E2 and E4).
Hooking the left or right thumbs into any of the four thumb loops (El, E2, E3, or E4) is optional when wearing the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult and the hooking of the thumbs in one or more of the loops is not a requirement for the stability or otherwise of the device but is optional for the added comfort of the person wearing the device.
If the person wearing the device chooses to, he or she may ignore the four thumb loops altogether leaving their arms to swing freely when wearing the device.
Part (F) is an integrated wide padded waist/hip belt welded to part (Clb) which is located at the bottom end (lumbar region) of the rear part of the body harness (C) running down the spine of the person wearing the device. Part (F) consists of a flexible, strong, lightweight and comfortable belt designed to be a stabilizing and anchoring point around the waist/hips of the person wearing the device for carrying a child safely and comfortably on the shoulders of an adult.
