Abstract

A friction stay comprises elongate base (10) connected to an arm (17) by a linkage (18, 19, 20). The linkage (18, 19, 20) constrains movement of the arm (17) in a plane between a position in which the arm (17) overlies the base (10) (a closed position of the window leaf) and a position in which the arm (17) is to one side of the base (10) and at an angle to the base (10) (an open position of the window leaf). The linkage includes a slider (15) moveable along the base (10) with the slider (15) being held against movement relative to the base (10) from a first position. Movement of the arm (17) from the first position to a second position relative to the base (10) releases the slider (15) for movement relative to the base from said first position. The linkage may act to release the slider by releasing a locking member (26) of the slider from engaging with a stop (31) provided on the base (10) as the arm (17) moves from said first position to said second position.
