Abstract

236,401. Risby, H. J. Aug. 12, 1924. Grates of the type comprising cylindrical grids adapted for rotation from the exterior of the furnace are arranged so that a pair of such grids forms the complete grate, the grids rotating in opposite, directions so as to maintain the fuel in intimate contact with the walls of the furnace. Each grid comprises an inclined shaft c mounted at the base of the chamber a and carrying collars b between which are disposed the firebars d. The angle of inclination of the grids may be the angle of repose of the fuel. At the front of the furnace the shafts c carry ratchet wheels i engaged by pawl levers h pivoted to the shafts c and moved by a bar g which is continually reciprocated by a crank disc f. The pawl levers h are so disposed that the upper portions of the grids move from the centre of each chamber a to the side walls, thus maintaining the fuel bed in contact with the walls of the chamber and preventing heaping up of fuel at the centre. The fire-bars d may be cooled by a water spray.
