Abstract
233,878. Borrmann, C. H. May 9, 1924. Extracts, making. - Relates to columns, for bringing fluids into contact in counter-current, of the type comprising chambers 1, 2, separated by partitions 4 which distribute the downflowing liquid by means of bell-seals 5, Fig. 1, or perforations 14, Fig. 2. The invention consists in forming the passages 6 for the up-flowing fluid of decreasing crosssectional area in the direction of flow, and of such dimensions as to prevent a reversal of flow. A packing 7, for example, a wire basket charged with balls or short lengths of pipe, may be provided. The perforations 14, Fig. 2, are preferably stamped out so as to form downwardly-projecting dripping-edges 13. The apparatus may be used for washing a liquid with a solvent of lower specific gravity.
