Abstract

A locking mechanism built inside a valve is operated, when the valve is closed, by an indexing pin key (1) which has a set of pins on it. Once inserted into the hand knob (14), the pins on the key frees a rotatable plug (2) from spring biassed tumblers (3). When the plug is turned via the key, the cam pin (7) at its end slides home a latch bolt (8) into a slot in the fixed head (g). This jams the rotation of spindle (11) thus locking the valve (12). To unlock, turn the indexing pin key (1) anti-clockwise so that the latch bolt (8) fully retracts into the spindle (11) thus freeing it once more. This mechanism does not affect the normal operations of the ON/OFF regulation of the flow. <IMAGE>

Description

BUILT-IN VALVE-LOCKING MECHANISM This invention relates to a new lockinq mechanism meant to be built inside valves.
Different types of valves are available in the market. Basically they are used either to ON/OFF or requlate the flow of a liquid which can be water, oil etc.. These valves do not have a Buiit-In Lockinq Mechanism. At most they are built with a provision for padlocking externally.
Accordinq to this present invention a set of lockinq mechanism is built inside the hand knob and spindle of a valve. This mechanism does not affect the normal operations of the valve.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example w3th reference to th accompany- ing drawings in which: Drawinq A - Shows the valve is close and the key is at the lockinq position, the latch bolt(8) is engaged into the fixed head(9).
Dravinq B - Shows a schematic drawing of the locking mechanism inside the hand knob(l4) and spindle(11) of a valve(l2) at the open and unlock position. At this position it is operated like any other ordinary valve. The hand knob is turned to open, shut or requlate the flow. As usual the hand knob rotation comes to a stop when the maximum valve openinq is reached. In the closinq process, as usual the hand knob is turned clockwise till the resistinq pressure is felt and further movement of the hand knob is difficult.
Drawing C - Shows the valve-close assembly drawing.
Drawing D - Shows the valve-open assembly drawing.
Drawing E - Shows the parts of the design.
drawing F - Shows the parts of the desiqn.
TKE WORKING PRINCIPLES OF THE BUILT-IN VALVE-LOCKING MECHANISM If the valve is going to be locked, it is first closed fully and the indexing pin key(l) is inserted and pushed down into the keyholes as shown in drawing A. With this action, the springs push the pin tumblers(3) down and levelled them thus allowing the rotatable plug to rotate via the key. The cam pin(7) at the end of the plug, by its rotation, transfers a sliding motion te the latch bolt(8). Half a turn of the key from its insertion position will fully home the latch bolt into the slot iii the fixed head as shown in drawing A. This jams the spindle(11) and thus locks the valve(12). Once locked the key can then be pulled out.The alignment of latch bolt with the slot is essential for a proper operation. Therefore a stopper Z is included to ensur-- that alignment is achieved when the hanl knob is turned to its dead end.
One point to be mentioned here is that the plug end has a stopper X which is limiLeå to travel for only half a turn. Therefore, the key can only made half a turn only.
To unlock the valve, the key is inserted back into the keyholes and then turned 180 degrees. This will fully retract the latch bolt(8) back into the spindle again thus freeing the spindle once more BUILT-IN VALVE-LOCKING MECHANISM PARTS LIST PART NO.
