" Crown corks," applying.-In a machine for fixing " crown corks " on bottles, the bottles are raised to a fixed crowning-head 3 by an hydraulic ram 8 operated by a pump 6, to which it is connected by a passage 7 provided with an adjustable spring-pressed relief-valve 10 which opens to return fluid to a container to prevent the pressure on the bottle from becoming excessive, the device thus adapting itself automatically to bottles of varying size. The return movement of the pump, which is actuated by an eccentric 14 on a shaft 13 adapted to be clutched to a, continuously-rotating wheel 24 by movement of a foot-lever 17, draws in fluid through an inlet valve 12 to replace that discharged through the valve 10. As shown, a shaft carrying a pinion 26, in mesh with a gear wheel 25 on the shaft 13, drives an agitator in a hopper in which the " crown corks " are stored. According to the Provisional Specification, the bottle, in rising, lifts a rod in the crowning head and the rod actuates a ratchet mechanism which drives the agitator, a flywheel on the shaft of the agitator ensuring practically continuous rotation thereof. The bottle table may support several bottles and be intermittently rotated, a cam which drives the pump providing a pause each time the ram is in its lowest position to allow the table to move to its next position.
