Hank type. - In apparatus for washing and like treatment of artificial silk varns &c., in which the hanks are lowered into and rotated in washing &c. liquids in a series of vats, the vats 1 are arranged in pairs and the frames 6 in which the rotary hankcarriers or reels 5 are mounted, are provided with two sets of reels, one on either side, the bases or standards 2 for supporting the frames being arranged between the pairs of vats. For transferring the frames 6 from one position to another, a travelling overhead carriage 16 is provided, and since the driving gear 9, 10 for the reels is brought into mesh with the gear 11 on the standards only when the frames are lowered into position, proper meshing is ensured by providing conical locating pins 12 on the frames and corresponding sockets on the standards, or vice vensa. The gear 11 receives motion from a main driving shaft 4 common to all the pairs of vats, and this shaft may be provided at one end with reversing gearing 15.
