Abstract
A battery-powered road vehicle of the type described in GB 1303071 has its batteries (10) in a series of narrow rectangular casings (30) of moulded plastics material disposed in a fixed stowage frame (8) below a load-carrying platform (2). Finger grips (38) at the tops of the shorter side walls of the casing facilitate the mounting and removal of the individual units provided by said casings. The platform has hinged portions (6) over the stowage frames; these portions carry shielding members (22, 24, 26) which protect the tops of the batteries and which are lifted clear to give access to the batteries when the hinged portions are raised. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to battery powered road vehicles
This invention relates to battery-powered road vehicles, and in particular to such vehicles having a load-carrying platform under which the batteries are located.
The known forms of propulsive power batteries and their mountings have many inconveniences.
The batteries themselves are set in wooden boxes that are heavy and bulky so that lifting tackle must be used if the batteries require replacement. These boxes are also expensive to produce and have a limited service life.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a battery-powered road vehicle provided with a load-carrying platform and a battery stowage below said platform, said stowage being occupied by a series of storage batteries disposed side-by-side in an individually insertable and removable manner.
A lid or shield is preferably provided over the top of said battery stowage, advantageously comprising dependent portions that extend downwards over upper side walls of the batteries.
If a portion of the load-carrying platform of the vehicle over the battery stowage is hinged to give access to the batteries it is possible for this portion to form a part of said lid and have said dependent portions fixed to it.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a battery for a battery powered
road vehicle comprising a box or outer casing of moulded plastics material and having an elongate rectangular plan form, the longer side faces of the box being substantially planar and the shorter side faces being provided with finger gripping portions in the region of their upper edges. In this way a series of relatively light batteries can occupy a battery stowage and be individually removed and replaced as required.
Preferably, a vehicle according to the invention, has a removable retaining strap at an outer side of the stowage for securing the series of batteries in the stowage. For co-operation with such a retainer, each battery box may have a locating recess on at least one shorter side face below the finger grip.
An example of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a vehicle according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the battery stowage of the vehicle, with the associated side portion of the load carrying platform partly raised.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a battery box for one of the batteries illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the finger grips provided on the shorter sides of the battery box in Fig. 3.
Over the main part of the length of the chassis of the vehicle shown in Fig. 1 there is a loadcarrying platform 2 comprising a fixed central section 4 and hinged opposite side marginal portions 6, substantially as described in the specification of UK patent 1 303 071. At both sides of the vehicle, below the platform and forwards of the rear wheel, there is a stowage for the batteries that power the vehicle electric drive, each stowage being formed by a support frame 8 fixed to the vehicle chassis. In the example illustrated a series of six individual batteries 10 are mounted side-by-side in each frame, each battery having three cells.
The frames have front and rear ends 12 between the lower margins which the batteries fit snugly, but the upper regions 14 of said ends of the frame are spaced slightly wider apart. The outer face of the frame is completely open except for a detachable horizontal strap 16 approximately at the level of the junction between the upper and lower regions of the frame ends. Similar holding straps (not shown) are fixedly secured at the inner face of the frame.
The batteries are located between the ends of the frame and the inner retaining straps before the outer retaining strap is secured in place. A lid-like shield 20 for the top of the unit is provided by members that are fixed to the underside of the hinged marginal portion of the platform, these comprising rigid end plates 22 that enter the spaces between the batteries and the end wall upper regions 14, a rigid outer member 24 that covers the outer sides of the batteries almost down to the level of the retaining strap 1 6, and a flexible member 26 extending along the length of the stowage and secured between an inner member of the support frame and the platform marginal portion near its hinge. When the marginal portion is lowered, therefore, the cells of the batteries are shielded from the weather and from damage by foreign matter.
Each battery comprises a moulded polyethylene box or outer casing 30 in which the cells are removably inserted and which may be provided with drainage holes in its base for any spillage from the cells. The casing 30 has a narrow rectangular plan form and the longer side walls 32 associated with the plan form are substantially planar so that the batteries can abut each other with little or no gap between them. Along the top edges of these side walls 32 are a series of indents 33 for the cable connectors between the cells of adjacent outer casings. The shorter side walls 34 have integrally moulded projections 36 at their upper ends that comprise undercut surfaces providing recessed finger grips 38 of upwardly convex form for handling the units. The thickness of the shorter side walls 34 is maintained substantially uniform over said finger grips and over integrally moulded steps which provide flange-like regions 39 extending over their height and reinforcing the finger-grip projections. There may be transverse recesses (not shown) formed in these flange-like regions for locating the retaining strap 16.
In use, the batteries can be handled manually without requiring special lifting tackle, because of their relatively small size and the lightweight outer casing construction. Being in relatively small units, it is easy to increase or decrease the cell size and numbers when required to meet different operational conditions. The connections between the batteries can be changed to provide different output voltages, and for this purpose the vehicle has a multi-voltage drive motor and a multivoltage battery charger.
