Abstract

205,907. Statham, N. July 28, 1922. Razors, safety. Relates to safety razors of the type in which the blade holder can be adjusted in relation to the handle about mutually perpendicular pivots into various positions for shaving, stropping, packing &c., and comprises a form adapted to be made of sheet material, wherein a disc-like hinge support is rotatably mounted on the face of the handle near one end, a blade holder is hinged to the edge of the hinge support at right angles to the pivot of the support and a blade guard is detachably secured to the blade holder. The handle 21, which may be of plated sheet, metal, is formed with a concave or dished up resilient portion 25 upon which a hinge carrying plate 18 is rotatably mounted by a stud 22. One edge of the plate 18 is formed with lugs or tongues 47 which are bent round a pin 17 to form a hinge support for the blade holder 2. The blade holder is formed of resilient sheet metal bent upon itself at 1 with inturned ends 3 terminating in blade gripping jaws 4. A tongue 37 slotted out from the underside of the holder is bent round the pin 17 to form the hinge attachment. To regulate the tightness of the hinge joint, the pin 17 may be provided with a head 26 and an adjustable nut 27. The movement of the pivoted parts on the handle may be limited by a lug 24 on the hinge support 18 co-operating with stops 20 on the handle, or the nut 27 or head 26 of the pin 17 may be formed to engage the neck of the handle for this purpose. The blade holder 2 is formed with recessed sides 32 to enable the blade to be manipulated and one or both of the jaws 4 may be bevelled at the ends to facilitate lateral insertion of the blade. The guard 6, Fig. 4, is formed with a curled channelled edge 7 and blade stops 8, openings 16 may also be provided. The rear part of the guard is divided into a central flat portion 11 and lateral portions 9, 10 downwardly bent or stepped to conform to the underside of the blade holder. To provided for attachment of the guard, the opening in the underside of the blade holder formed by slotting out the hinge tongue 37, is extended to the bend 3 where it is widened out as indicated at 36, Fig. 5, the central flat portion 11 of the guard being inserted through such widened end 36 and riding on the edges 35, whilst the lateral stepped portions 9, 10 slide externally of the holder, the parts being finally positioned by cooperating indentations 15, 23. The central portion 11 of the guard may be formed with a downwardly turned lug 12 to facilitate manipulation, the end of the riding edge on either side thereof being upturned as at 14 to facilitate insertion into the slot, 36.
