Abstract
203,068. Wilisch, J. A. June 7, 1922. Separators. - Apparatus for purifying air, drying and straining steam, separating acids and soot from waste gases, and like processes comprises undulating passages formed by separating walls which are orescent-shaped in cross section. Fig. 6 shows three sets of solid crescent-shaped blades forming undulating passages in the chamber 7 through which the gases pass. Figs. 2 - - 5 show various modifications of the shape of vanes made of cast or sheet metal and arranged so that the dotted bounding lines enclose a crescent-shaped area. The recesses between the. teeth of these formations form collecting pockets for the removed material. In a further modification, more especially for drying and straining steam and vapours, separating elements of the form shown in Fig. 4 are arranged so that the entrances for the gas to the separation passages are in the form of broadened laval nozzles extending in diffusor-like manner towards the separation passage. Pieces cast on to the ends of the separating members form the nozzles, and also form supports for the next separating member of the series. In other modifications for treating atmospheric air, including that supplied to internal-combustion engines, liquid is siphoned from a tank by depending wicks or expressed therefrom by a screw-actuated pressure plate so as to drip down between the ribs of the separating members and come into direct contact with the air. In another modification the liquid is ejected through the front edges of the vanes against the incoming stream of gas. In a further modification the vanes are arranged on the periphery of tubes through which the water circulates. A heating or cooling as well as moistening and cleaning affect can be effected under these circumstances.
